Perry Shield and Spickett Bowl 2007
The WBU's Inter-Area events - the Perry for Open Teams and the Spickett for Ladies' Teams - were held on May 19-20 2007 at Gwent Bridge Academy. Congratulations to the East who retained the Perry, and the West's ladies who took the Spickett. Both events were very exciting.
In the Perry, Mid Wales were leading with two of the nine 10-board matches to go, but lost the penultimate match to the East. The key deal here saw both teams bid a grand slam which required either the Club or the Diamond finesse. Diane Kurbalija chose well and the Mid declarer didn't, but had the key cards been reversed, Mid Wales would have retained a good overall lead. The last matches saw each of the four Areas with a chance of overall victory, and the East narrowly beat the North to clinch the trophy.
In the Spickett, three teams were in contention to the end, when the West drew clear. Mid Wales achieved the remarkable feat of beating all three other areas, but only coming third overall!
